A History of Orbea Mountain Bikes
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010One brand that is particularly well known in the field of mountain biking is Orbea mountain bikes. The business is based in the North of Spain in the Basque country, in a town called Mallavia. These days their range includes Orbea mountain bikes, touring bikes and road bikes.
An interesting fact about the company is that Orbea actually started out as an arms company. In the beginning Orbea made rifles, pistols and their cartridges. All through Spain, Orbea was renowned for the weapons it made. Certianly, by the 1870s, Orbea was one of the most influential and successful companies in the area.
Orbea continued making weapons all the way up until when the Spanish Civil War Ended when it was hit by a drop in demand. Things also changed in 1926 when the business split into two seprate companies following family problems. Orbea mountain bikes was born from one of the companies brought about by the split of the original company.
As one would expect from a big and famous name in cycling, Orbea has always sponsored and worked closely with high profile cycling teams. Two of the teams with which it has strong ties are Euskaltel-Euskadi and Xacobeo-Galicia. Additionally, Orbea mountain bikes has had its own team since 2005.
Today the brand also sponsors an array of biking events Europe-wide and Orbea products can often be found being given as prizes in such events. Of the company’s current designs, a large proportion are made from carbon fibre which is a modern bike material. And the company also makes several bikes with frames made entirely of aluminium, which are incredibly lightweight and popular.
Thanks to sponsorship of high profile biking events and shows providing plenty of publicity, the company’s future appears secure. Orbea sponsors some of Spain’s biggest events in the field of mountain bikes which welcome participation from professionals and members of the public. The fact that their bikes are now supplied all over the world serves to demonstrate their quality.
