Some Tips to Reduce the Cost of Backpacking Gear

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Many have never gone camping before. One of the main reason is the fear of not having the right gear. Buying the right gear can cost you a lot of money if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Just about every camping equipment is expensive. Hiking boots, stoves, sleeping bags, tents, backpacks and trekking poles cost a lot of money. Depending on the terrain, you might need crampons, gaiters, balaclavas and other special equipment. If you are hiking with children you might want to have a child carrier.

If you want have the best of everything, then it could really cost you a lot of money. Yet there are still a lot of people who don’t have that much money to spare that enjoy hiking and camping with little problems. Manufacturers like to make you think that you need all this stuff and all the expensive features.

The truth is camping is about going back to basics. You don’t need the expensive equipment. You can even find what you need in your own home or the local thrift store.

Check out the gear tips below that can really cut your costs:

- Raincoats are very expensive and can sometimes be too hot for you. Layers will keep you warm and offers you can adjust if it gets too hot by removing the layers. If you use cotton, you will stay wet for a long time if you sweat. Use synthetics and wool instead. Synthetics wick away water and keeps you dry. Wool keeps you warm even when it’s wet.

- A windbreaker can be good option for a cheap waterproof outer shell. You only need expensive parkas when you’re going for an expedition under harsh conditions.

- Beginners should start with easy terrain and therefore a cheap tent is usually sufficient especially if you use a seam sealer. Do this before every camping trip. You can find cheap tents just about everywhere. Remember to check for tears. Unless you’re backpacking, you don’t really need an expensive tent.

- A lightweight down sleeping bag can cost you a lot of money. A zero degree synthetic sleeping bag should be good enough for the mountains in most cases. Use a chemical warmer and some layers of clothing to keep warm inside your sleeping bag. If you’re not backpacking and weight is not an issue, you can even be without the sleeping bag. Just use whatever suitable bedding you can find that doesn’t have to cost the mortgage but make sure you insulate yourself from the ground.

- The worst thing that can happen to you is getting blisters. That’s why I don’t recommend using just any cheap hiking boot. However if you’re just camping, you can wear just about any footwear as long as you’re comfortable.

- Campfires are not always allowed so you would need to use a camping stove for cooking. If not, there are a lot of cheap and practical stoves out there. You can either buy it new or used or you even just borrow them.

- For trekking poles you can just use a strong enough stick. I’ve used it for a few years without any problems. Some people may argue that cutting out sticks from the forest is bad for the environment and I recommend that you avoid cutting out walking sticks on the trail but the process of making those expensive trekking poles takes an even bigger toll on the environment.

This list is pretty basic but covers the most common concerns people have told me about. Camping gear doesn’t have to be overly expensive.

Of course the tips here may not apply to every situation. Sometimes you need specialty equipment e.g. gaiter but whenever possible you can use what you already have.

Find Out What a Bivy Sack is?

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Another name for a bivvy is bivouac sack. They evolved from the old sleeping bag cover. They’re a breeze to rig up, smaller than any other type of tent, lightweight and waterproof. They’re commonly used by solo hikers, mountain climbers and the military.

Construction

A simple bivvy consist of a single layer of waterproof fabric. Early versions of the bivy made use of silnylon as the waterproof shell. It is a very light fabric that gives you about another 10 degree fahrenheit extra protection from weather.

One big problem with the earlier versions of the bivvy sack is the humidity that condenses on the inside renders sleeping bags to be wet. This still happens in some hiking tents today. The use of the waterproof/breathable fabric, Gore-Tex, helps to remove some of the humidity while keeping out water from the outside.

Another way that this problem is addressed is by using an inner vapor barrier liner bag or VBL. VBLs prevent body moisture from entering the condensing in the sleeping bag.

In the past, bivvy bags have a small hole above the user’s face for breathing. Thanks to Gore-Tex Exchange Lite, an air permeable version of the fabric, the bivvy can be safely zipped up to cover the whole body including the head thus shutting out the elements completely. This new fabric allows both carbon dioxide exhaled by the user and moisture to escape.

Bivvy shelters

In biological terms, the bivvy sack is a macroinvertebrate, meaning it has no spine or rigid structure. Bivvy shelters on the other hand employs hoops over the head and feet so that the fabric is kept off the user resulting in more breathing room around the head. This also prevents the condensation from soaking into the sleeping bag.

Bivvy shelters weigh a bit more than bivvy sacks but the increased comfort justifies the additional weight. However, bivvy sacks are still favored among mountain climbers and backpackers or adventurers on dangerous expeditions as a compact emergeny shelter.

Popularity

Improvement in bivvy shelters have given rise to the number of experienced hikers who favor them. Some like the Outdoor Research Deluxe Bivy have anticlaustrophobic features like a white interior with a shock-corded Delrin hoop for breathing room and 5-foot zippers that allow you to ventilate while keeping you dry.

Bivvies are also popular among carp fishermen who fish throughout the night. This tiny little tent alternative is becoming more advanced and user friendly as manufacturers scramble to make better bivvies in response to the increasing demands.

Guard Yourself Against The Forces of Nature And Have A Great Camping Experience With Vango Tents

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Providing your eyes a breather from staring at the monitor, working those muscles that have become idle due to your deskbound job, evading the bustle of the metropolis and breathing in fresh air, you bundle your things and go outdoors with your friends and loved ones. During the weekend, you will be away from the luxury of your abode, your soft bed and your cozy room. You will be out in the open, vulnerable to the changes in the weather condition, vulnerable to the pestering insects.

As such, you need something that can guard you against these weather conditions and this is the basic purpose of a tent. Tents such as Vango tents are designed to address the requirement of campers for a refuge. A tent, as a shelter, should be able to defend you against the abrupt changes in the weather condition. It should be able to withstand heavy rain and should make you sheltered all through those chilly nights. So one of the aspects that you should look for in a tent is it should be made of rainproof fabric. The purpose of you taking a breather from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and be with nature will be defeated if you get soaked and return to the metropolis sick. One more thing to put into consideration when purchasing a tent is insulation. There are in fact tents that are made from more than a layer of synthetic material and that includes an air pocket in the middle, which helps shut the cold out.

There are many types of tents and some of the most popular of which are the Coleman tents. Besides, there are lots of stores where you can buy them from, especially in the internet. The models come in various styles, sizes, and colors and there is definitely so much to choose from. But needless to say, there are likewise other things that you need to think about such as if a tent is easy to set up and light to carry.

The good thing about the makers of tents is that they come up with models that focus on the growing and evolving needs of campers. Khyam tents, for example, look so fashionable and rise above the typical appearance of a tent. There really are lots of aspects that must be considered when buying a tent. Yet in the end, it is your shelter, security and solace that makes a difference.

With a good tent used for refuge whilst you are out of town over the weekend, you are kept against the elements of nature that can at times be nasty. Your camping experience is supposed to be entertaining and you cannot afford to get ill whilst your peers are out there taking pleasure in the beauty of nature.

Making Sure Your Internal Frame Backpack Has The Complete Hiking Equipment

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

One thing you need to be careful of is packing your camping gear because you wouldn’t like to leave what you need and bring what you don’t need.

This would largely depend on the terrain and weather and whether there are some special requirements. Experience will make packing a little bit easier the next time.

Every camping trip will bring insights to whether your camp equipment were sufficient or whether you need something more. In the end it could make it easier for you to pack minimally and go ultralight hiking.

If you want to keep your gear dry, use three plastics inside your internal frame backpack. You can also use 3 large stuff sacks. At the bottom should be for hiking clothes, fuel, camp stove and other heavy gear or stuff that don’t get used very often. The plastic bag in the middle should be for food and the one on top for electronics like GPS, Ipod, batteries and cellphones.

Putting your wallet in your pocket may not be such a great idea as I one day found out. It took the whole day to dry the money. If you need quick access, use the exterior pockets.

I use ziploc bags a lot to organize my gear. You can further segregate your breakfast from your detergent, utensitls, cellphone, and more with this useful plastic bag. A must-have if you want to ensure that your gear stays dry.

Don’t forget the first aid kit. You never know what might happen in the outdoors. A mess kit, bugspray, waterproof matches and whistle are important items to have. If you need to quick access to a particular item then keep them in the outer side pockets. You must know where you put important items and try not change where you put them. Losing things is not fun especially when it happens on a camping trip.

Having enough food and snacks is very important. A lot more food is required on a hiking trip than normal because you will burn a ton of calories. You would only truly know how much food you need through trial and error and to be safe carry more food than you think you might need. The same goes for water. Not having enough water can make life very difficult for you on a hiking trip. Don’t forget to bring some kind of water treatment system like a water filter or iodine tablets so that you can refill when the opportunity arises.

A trail mix is one of the best things you can have on a hiking trip. You get a lot of energy from the natural fat in nuts and the dried fruits provide good fiber and nutrition. Energy bars and gels can also give you a boost. Avoid chocolate when it’s hot unless you take the necessary precautions to prevent it from making a mess as it is melted by the heat.

Canned food should be avoided because they’re heavy and the waste is not easily disposed. You need to carry your rubbish until you can dispose of it properly.

Dehydrated foods are great for backpacking because they’re very light yet a very good source of nutrition and they taste good too. It’s a good idea to pack a camp stove. For fuel economy use a liquid fuel camping stove. They still work well in extremely cold weather unlike propane stoves that can freeze at a certain temperature and you may have problems lighting it up.

Your clothing should contain no cotton because cotton absorbs your sweat and being in wet clothes in cold weather is really bad. Synthetic or nylon fiber or wool clothing including socks, underwear, shirt and fleeces are quick drying.

A checklist will reduce the chances of you missing out on anything. Think about everything that you might need on a hiking trip. Then you decide which ones you really need and which ones you can be without.

1. Vacation the Simplest Way with a Timeshare!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

A Timeshare can be a simple and carefree vacation with the family or a nice getaway with friends, but either way, it will be wonderful for any affair. Timeshare companies will work with you to get the job done and create the best vacation they possibly can for you. On that note, I’ll be seeing you now! I’m on my way to Ireland to visit me good old pals! And this trip was so easy to plan. I contacted a timeshare agency and I was on my way! Good Luck to ye now! And good travels to ye too!

Spun Version:

Vacation Rentals and timeshares are some of the most popular ways to travels these days. With easy arrangement, gorgeous locations, and low inexpensive prices a vacation is not as far away as you think. Some people even Sell Timeshare as a way of using vacations homes when they can’t. Timeshares are extremely easy to use and much easier to plan a vacation with. If your dream vacation happens to be available in a timeshare, you will probably have much more luxurious accommodations, rather than a hotel, and you could pick a place anywhere on the globe.

A timeshare is kind of self explanatory. You simply share a part of time with other people around the world in a certain luxury condominium or beach shack. You pay for that amount of time like you would at any other hotel, but your vacation will be much lower. Instead of going through the hassle of finding a four or five star hotel, a timeshare can be much easier to create a more relaxed environment for your vacation. Timeshares are great to have also, because in some cases, if your trip doesn’t happen, you can sometimes move your timeshare to a better date.

Timeshares are often in really beautiful locations. Sometimes you can find a beautiful apartment in the streets of romantic Paris, or even a breezy beach condo on the shores of Northern Florida. There really are no limits to the possibilities. Timeshares are most often sold my companies who can make sure that you are getting you where you need to go. On that note, many companies will often make your vacation even simpler by planning ahead for your length of stay, your simple or extravagant itinerary, and even plane or rental car tickets and passes. Sometimes if there is a resort such as Disney World in your area, they can even help you arrange tickets to events such as that.

Timeshares are also awesome presents when you really don’t know what to give someone for a special event. If a friend or a relative has forver been wanting to visit the Bahamas or even a simple trip to Florida, then a Timeshare may just be the easiest gift idea for you. You can basically just pick a place and a time of year and you are all set. I have a colleague who honestly uses them as prizes and incentives for her collegues in work; it works wonders because people are basically winning a free vacation!
