Ultralight And Waterproof Sack Bag For Down Sleeping Bags & Other Gear

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

At the beginning of my love interest with hiking and camping I used to pack my down bag loose into the backpack or even tie it on the outside.

It took me 3 trips before I started using stuff sacks to store my sleeping bag.

These cylindrical shaped nylon, usually waterproof, enclosures protect your bag from unnecessary wear and tear and also from the rain.

Material

Most stuff sacks are made of newer fabrics like coated polyester and ultralight silicone-impregnated nylon.

While the material itself is waterproof, the drawstring closure in most stuff sacks is not so be careful about getting it into water and if you tie your sleeping bag to the outside of your backpack, make sure you at least cover the drawstring closure with a waterproof material to protect against rain. A plastic bag will do in most cases.

Newer stuff sacks like the eVac Dry Sack from Sea To Summit don’t use drawstring closures but instead you roll the sack down and then close the buckle.

This accomplishes two things. First, when you roll the sack down air is pushed out of the base so water can’t get in.

Second, it allows you to save both space and weight. The weight saving though is not such a big deal. You only save a little bit of weight but the space saving is much appreciated.

The lightest stuff sacks are made of silicone-impregnated nylon parachute cloth. It can be as light as 0.5 oz or even less.

GoLite employs this type of material and they made an improvement to the drawstring closure by adding a collar instead of just a drawstring and flap configuration.

Outdoor Research on the other hand uses a good waterproof fabric called Hydroseal.

This fabric is tough and can handle rough use but still limp enough to mold itself to the contents of the sack. This sack bag is available in the drawstring-flap configuration as well as roll closure secured with Velcro bindings.

Compression and Size

Most stuff sack suppliers have some sort of compression model with straps, laces or double drawstrings that reduces the volume by up to half. You can also stuff in your down jacket or windbreaker jacket together with the sleeping bag into the sack. Make sure that yours is big enough for you to easily put in whatever you intend to put in.

Don’t get a small stuff sack just because you think it would save you space because in most cases you’ll just have unused, wasted space in your backpack as a result.

Another problem is that even if you can cram your sleeping bag and other stuff into the sack when you’re at home, doing so in less than ideal conditions on an empty stomach with the cold wind biting at you can turn it into a monstrous task.

Get one that’s big enough to take its load with extra room to spare, leaving it soft, malleable and easy to stuff. I use Outdoor Research Hydroseal DryComp Sacks but I’m thinking of getting the eVac Dry Sack from Sea to Summit for myself.

Teen Summer Camps: Learning And Fun Brought Under One Roof!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Summer camps for teens are motivating force for their ability to enhance their mind in a relaxed and informal summer environment, usually out in the countryside. For this reason, teen summer camps are a good decision both for teens and for youth. Particularly for teenagers, the advantages are obvious.

Please remember that teen summer camps are usually very short term programs where teenagers go to do fun arts and crafts, enjoy campfire songs and sleep in cabins or tents in the wilderness. Campers take part in games, art projects, audio-video recording, songs and dance lessons.

Each a summer camp will offer diverse projects from sporting to more academic but all of them are still pleasing. In fact camps consist of all the following categories: summer computer camps, Sports camps, and Robotics camps. In one of the most admired camp projects offered at very many camps the teens learn media and movie production. A great thing at some camps is that each camper is allowed to use the original recordings to use in their portfolios.

Each student, after successfully finishing a summer camp program, is awarded a diploma. It gives everyone a motivation to participate and do best, and can be very beneficial as part of the teenagers resume, particularly for getting holiday and part-time jobs.

Besides the benefits of summer camps academically, they also provide for many kids, the first opportunity to spend time away from dwelling. Summer camps are therefore broadening for the children that stay over-night. Yet, some of the younger and more nervous may not prefer to join overnight summer camp.

Summer camp managements appreciate this dilemma of them. Students are so generally provided with the option of dormitory lodging or on-campus residence.

A camp guide told me lately that their children leave the camp every summer with cultural enlightenment, a sense of maturity, heightened English skills and lifelong friends from around the world.

The fact is that the social-mix is generally wider compared to the schools these teens attend during term-time, and this is how they hang around with campers from diverse backgrounds during the camp and maybe even dissimilar nationalities as well.

It means that students study diverse coping-skills while shaping their own supportive system among their fellow campers. Their friendships are intensified during the often week-long summer camp knowledge and experience.

It is often said therefore, that the value of summer camps is something less in relation to what they actually do while at them, but it is the talents they cultivate at supporting teens to better lead life once they go away that are the most beneficial.

Therefore, let’s not forget an added last crucial factor in the summer camp experience. That is for campers going grades 9 through 12 to study new skills that prepare them for the next grade level and the next big step, which is certainly their beginning at college.

Practical Recommendations - How To Protect Your Camping Supplies

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

“Thank you very much, tasted great, please come again next year!” – This is the message the little bugger that ate your supplies last night might have left.

In Canada they got special tight fitting containers, where campers have got to keep their grub and leftovers at night, so bears don’t have a chance to help themselves.

You might not venture out to Canada, but anyway, there is always someone inviting himself to dinner! If you don’t carry tight fitting containers, put your meals and supplies in a plastic bag and hang it in a tree!

In the summer heat your eats will stays fresh and cool if you put it in a plastic bag, dig a little hole in the ground and burry it. A nice little brook will also do.

OK, so you packed the groceries, but you don’t carry any works, like camping skillets and pans in your Cheap Camping Equipment? Don’t you fret; there are plenty of ways to cook a warm meal!

When it comes to cooking with an open fire, you’ll want to use the embers, because the heat emitted is more even and better than flames.

Meat and Vegetables: The simplest way is using sticks. Get a green limp and get the bark off at least on the parts above the fire. It needs to be long enough, so you don’t burn yourself.

Almost any kind of meats and vegetables can be skewered on a stick in little pieces and slowly roasted above the embers. If you don’t want to hold the stick the whole time, build yourself a makeshift support with an extra limp with a fork and weight down the end of the stick with a big enough rock to keep it in place. You can even make your own skillet if you get a big, flat rock, clean it up a bit and put it right in the embers. It’ll heat up enough to be used as a frying pan for steak and other meats and vegetables. Of cause, you can always use the ever present tinfoil, as long as you dispose off properly after usage. Wrap whatever you got with one or two layers, tight the package up real good and put it into the embers.

You could even build a frying pan with strong enough tinfoil, use a stick with a limp-fork. This comes in handy if you want to prepare liquid meals like scrambled eggs or little pancakes!

All right, so you know you’ll still get by, even if you didn’t bring all your gear, like your Camping skillet.

It’s always a good thing to set up a list and mark every item off before you leave. You might not always be close to a city or town to simply buy whatever you forgot in the nearest outdoor shop. But, it doesn’t hurt to know what to do, just in case!

As always, good camping, my friends!
